Many of us are smart enough to recognize when we aren’t getting what we want out of life and that it will take deliberate, mindful change in ourselves to realize the change we want in life. But all too often we try to change what we do rather than looking at the fundamental makeup of who we are.
Many personal development and success coaches concentrate on the skills needed to accomplish change, and these things are necessary. Gaining control over bad habits is a fundamental key to success. But its only part of the key. Like fixing a tire on a car with a dead battery, it only solves part of the problem and such approaches often leaving people feeling like failures because all the effort they’ve put forth has only brought them small, if any results.
The key to true fulfillment and success in life lies first in realizing that we are made up of spirit, emotions and intellect. Mastering bad habits (i.e. changing what we DO) only deals with one aspect of who we are. Without also working on the emotions and the spirit, we are as unstable as a three legged stool with only one leg.
In order for the skills we learn and the tools we receive to truly launch us into success, we must also nourish the spirit and transform the emotions. Dealing with fears and negative beliefs about ourselves that drive our behaviors is a necessary foundation for building success in our lives.
